Math Tutoring in the Tutor Zone is an important resource for students in math and other related curricula.  Math consultants are available on a walk-in basis at the Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses during scheduled hours which are posted. Students may contact a consultant in person, by phone, or e-mail during hours of operation at either campus without the need for an appointment.

In order to ensure availability to Thomas Nelson students, assistance is limited to those students who are currently enrolled in math courses at Thomas Nelson. Students with disabilities may request assistance from consultants. Based on need, students may be referred to the Disabled Students Services Office.

Tutor Zone Math offerings include individualized mathematics assistance, assistance utilizing recommended calculators for coursework, and providing computers to access MyMathLab, Blackboard, MyLabsPlus, and WebAssign, or other electronic materials related to Thomas Nelson math courses. Tutor Zone Math consultants also make available supplemental instructional materials to help students review and improve mathematical skills.

The Math consultants will assist students with homework from their Thomas Nelson math courses but are unable to help students with graded assignments to include projects, take-home tests, extra credit assignments and quizzes in keeping with the Thomas Nelson Community College Student Handbook’s description of academic honesty.

Can I get help with something that is not a Thomas Nelson class? (i.e. placement test, standardized test, class at another college)
No, The Tutor Zone's Math Center only provides assistance with classes that are being taken at Thomas Nelson.

Do you have any information on the Virginia Placement Test for math?
Yes, here is a list of resources for the placement test.

Often a math instructional assistant is available right away, but at busy times you may have to wait to be seen. This is typically no longer than 15 minutes.

How much help can I get?
We can answer specific questions and help if you're stuck on a homework problem. Tutor Zone's Math Center is not a substitute for attending your lectures. When we are busy, students must take turns asking questions and getting assistance.

If you would like to make an appointment with a tutor who can spend an hour working individually with you, we recommend that you try Peer Tutoring.

Can you help me with my calculator?
Yes! We are very knowledgeable about the TI-83 and TI-84, and we can help with basic scientific calculators too. We'll do our best to help with whatever kind of calculator you have.

What classes can I get help for?
We can help with any math classes offered at Thomas Nelson (MTT, MTE, or MTH).
We may be able to help with the math that you encounter in other classes (such as science, engineering, or nursing classes) but we do not have any specific knowledge on these subjects. We do not help with accounting.
